Interesting story from Miyagi, the prefecture north of Fukushima that was also hit by the devastating tsunamis in 2011. It seems that the head monk at a temple there had bought an old second-hand Seiko clock, more than 100 years old, which he hung in the temple building.
Fuminji Temple is just a few hundred metres inland from the coast and so was hit by the tsunami and badly damaged. In the aftermath the clock was found and cleaned up but it refused to work again …. until the 13th of February this year, when another strong quake struck in the same region as the 2011 one (we felt this one strongly even in Tokyo).
The following morning the Buddhist temple’s head priest went to check the main hall for any damage when he heard a ticking sound. The clock, which had remained silent even after being repeatedly cleaned, was moving again. And it continues to work after an interval of ten years!
